Winston-Salem, NC
The Innovation Quarter is a 200+ acre biotechnology research park located in the east end of downtown Winston-Salem. Most of the acreage was formerly industrial property, much of it donated by RJ Reynolds or purchased from Norfolk Southern Railroad. Early work included rezoning, street closings, railroad relocation, utility relocations and due diligence for land acquisition. Stimmel was hired in 2008 to begin addressing more global planning and aesthetic issues. The master plan addresses pedestrian and vehicular circulation, land use, parking, streetscape design and sustainability. Where the previous master plan created more of a segregated campus feel, the Board and Stimmel agreed the design should be more urban, extending the existing fabric and reconnecting to neighborhoods cut off from the heart of the city.

“Innovation Quarter is an important asset to Winston-Salem, both economically and esthetically to the gateway of downtown. Stimmel’s ability to design and plan around the vision for the Research Park has contributed to its success." –Bill Dean, Chairman, North Carolina Research Parks Network
