Elon University’s new gateway signage at the northern entrance on North O’Kelly Avenue marks a significant enhancement to campus accessibility and aesthetics. Completed in 2023, this project includes a prominent brick gateway signage wall at the intersection of North O’Kelly Avenue and University Drive, along with a median tower constructed on North O’Kelly Avenue. These elements combine to provide a grand and inviting entryway for visitors, including prospective students and their families.
The gateway signage serves as a clear navigational guide, directing guests to The Inn at Elon and the Inman Admissions Building, thereby clarifying the main entrance to the campus. Prior to this development, there was some confusion about whether to enter campus from Williams Avenue or O’Kelly Avenue. As Elon’s University Architect, Brad Moore, noted, this new entry point resolves ambiguity and enhances the visitor experience by guiding them seamlessly to key destinations on campus.
In alignment with Elon University’s campus master plan, Stimmel was instrumental in developing the design and construction documents for the new gateway signage. Their work emphasizes Elon’s brand identity, which is consistently recognized for its beautiful college environment. The project features taller columns, updated lighting, and identity graphics that not only elevate the main entrance but also retrofit several existing signs at secondary gateways and neighborhood areas throughout the campus. These improvements ensure a cohesive and welcoming aesthetic that reinforces Elon’s reputation as a leading institution.
This project is a testament to the collaborative efforts between Elon University, its donors, and Stimmel. The new signage and retrofits significantly enhance the campus’s entrance, creating a memorable first impression for all visitors.
