The Forsyth County Central Library in downtown Winston-Salem underwent a significant transformation, blending modern functionality with a respect for the original structure. The project expanded the library from 85,000 to 105,000 square feet, with approximately 50,000 square feet of new construction. The 1950s portion of the building was demolished, while the 1979 addition was gutted & repurposed. The redesigned library features a variety of new amenities, including a 308-seat auditorium, flexible event spaces, a café, a large outdoor lawn, a children’s program space, & a reading garden with sculptures & granite seating. This reimagined facility serves as a vibrant hub for the community, designed to meet the needs of 21st-century patrons while preserving the library’s historical significance.
Stimmel played an essential role in the success of this project, providing comprehensive site planning & engineering services. Our team was responsible for Research & Analysis, Site Utilities, Grading & Erosion Control, & Permitting, as well as the creation of hardscape & landscape plans. Stimmel’s landscape architecture ensured that the new outdoor spaces, such as the reading garden & event lawn, were integrated seamlessly into the urban fabric, fostering a welcoming & accessible environment for all visitors. The design emphasized connectivity, sustainability, & community engagement, ensuring the library would continue to evolve & serve future generations.
