L.C. Coleman Park is a vital green space in the heart of a historically under-served community. In an effort to address the longstanding need for revitalized recreational spaces, the Mecklenburg County Board of County Commissioners allocated $2.85 million to upgrade L.C. Coleman Park. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve local parks, particularly those in communities that have been historically under-invested.
Spanning 19 acres, the park, named after the dedicated community activist L.C. Coleman, has been a focal point for the West Charlotte community for decades. Coleman was instrumental in advocating for the integration of city parks & improvements in local infrastructure, leaving a lasting legacy of community activism & social equity. The proposed improvements, developed in close collaboration with local residents, include creating a multi-use grassy area for picnics, sports, & dog walking. The community’s feedback highlighted a strong desire for a skate park, tennis courts, public meeting space or amphitheater, & paved walking path. These additions aim to create a more inclusive, accessible, & engaging environment for all park users. The park is also home to a creek that contributes to the Stewart Creek Watershed, adding a natural element that will be preserved & integrated. The team’s focus was to ensure that L.C. Coleman Park remains a vibrant, community-focused space that honors its historical significance while meeting contemporary needs.
