Located in Morganton, Courthouse Square is the central meeting place in town & has been for over 120 years. Enhancements to this multi-purpose space will activate it another 100+ years for the citizens of Morganton, Burke County & as an attraction for visitors. The Conceptual Plan offers open views to the historic Burke County Courthouse, entry plaza with public art, flexible space for markets & smaller gatherings, seating nodes & a sloped lawn down the multi-purpose stage with restrooms located below. Orientation away from the Courthouse symmetry provides better views to each structure, improved sound quality, ADA access, food truck parking, accent lighting & celebration of the Meridian Stones noting true North still located in the square.
A 33-person Steering Committee comprised of local artists, business owners, residents & key City staff helped to review the design approach & worked with Stimmel to facilitate 2 public input meetings. The first meeting gained input for programming, needs & issues & the second meeting was to present conceptual plans, elevations & receive comments. Between 150-200 folks showed up at each public meeting with many others stopping by City Hall to offer their input. Public Art funds from the NC Arts Council & City of Morganton were granted, funding San Diego Artist Miki Iwasaki to create a cohesive design that incorporated art in the new public space. The artwork activates & enhances the cultural connectivity & economic vitality downtown through engaging artwork & creative placemaking; reflecting the strong arts & cultural identity of the community, as well as the natural & historic location.
