The City of Winston-Salem decided that it was time to give Washington Park much needed updates, address maintenance concerns & improve amenities. They hired Stimmel in 2017 to provide master planning services for the 86 acre park. Developed during 3 public input sessions that included discussing the opportunities, constraints & wish list for the park’s revitalization, & the comments of people living nearby & City staff, the new Master Plan shows a North Athletic District & South Historic Restoration of the park.
Proposed improvements for the Park included addressing deferred maintenance issues, reorienting the ball fields to the more active side of the park, improving parking & lighting, & providing more areas of the park as open space to allow for more passive recreational opportunities in the historic areas of the park. In addition, new proposed improvements include: Existing Path Improvements, Renovation of Park Shelters, New Restrooms with heated pipe chase for year-round use, Park Accessibility, New Pedestrian Connections at the south end of the park, Correction of Existing Drainage, Erosion & Flooding Problems, Infrastructure Improvements & Cohesive Wayfinding Signage to park facilities. Stimmel also provided phased cost estimates to the City for future funding initiatives to make the master plan a reality.
